10 interesting facts about Ralph Lauren 1. Ralph Lauren was born in 1939 in the Bronx, New York, the youngest of four children in a family of Jewish immigrants from Belarus. Because of bullying at school, Ralph and one of his brothers changed their surname from Lifschitz to Lauren. 2. Ralph Lauren started as a glove salesman. 3. In 1967, when narrow ties were fashionable, Ralph Lauren designed very wide, colourful ties and marketed them under the name POLO Ralph Lauren. 4. In that first year, Ralph Lauren sold half a million dollars' worth of ties. 5. In 1972, Ralph Lauren designed a short-sleeved cotton shirt in 24 colours. The polo player emblem appeared on the left for the first time. 6. In 1974, Robert Redford wore a pink suit designed by Ralph Lauren in the film adaptation of The Great Gatsby. 7. In 1983, the safari-look collection became a success. Ralph had never been to Africa. 8. Ralph Lauren was named America's wealthiest man in fashion.
